Blackboard Service Pack update 6/9/2012

We will be updating the Blackboard Learning Management system from 9.1 Service Pack 5 to 9.1 Service Pack 7 on Saturday, June 9 between midnight and 10AM. The Blackboard Learning System functions will be unavailable. Portal services including UR ePay, Student/Instructor/Advisor Access and email will be available.

Most of the changes are performance improvements and enabling some new data features.

Additionally, the Learning Objects Blog and Wiki tools will no longer be available. You can find out more about the Blackboard native Blog and Wiki tools and exporting your Learning Objects data before June 30, 2012.

Paste from Word Mashup – new tool

For anyone experiencing display issues when you paste content into Blackboard from Microsoft Word or other sources that include markup code, the new Paste from Word Mashup tool should help.

Wherever you see Blackboard’s Visual Text Box Editor (VTBE) you can now select the Add Mashup button.

Select the Paste from Word option.

Paste your text into the box and then submit. You will need to submit one more time to save the item.

You can use this Paste from Word Mashup option wherever the VTBE is displayed including the following places:

Create Item from the Build content menu
Create Announcement
Discussion Forum Threads and messages
Journal entries
Blog posts
Wiki posts
Test questions and answers

Custom Banners aligned to your Primary Role in Blackboard

On December 28, 2011 we are implementing a policy where your primary role will be aligned to your HR division. This means that if you are an employee you will always see the banner image for your home department/division rather than the school where you might be taking a class.

Example: you could work as a floor nurse in the hospital but also be taking a class in the School of Nursing. In this case you will see the URMC banner not the School of Nursing banner. None of the other tabs and modules you have access to will be affected by this change. All of your course information will still display just as it has in the past.

Older Courses no longer Displayed

Unavailable courses that are older than two years will no longer be displayed to faculty, instructors and course builders. We believe that this will cut down on the number of courses listed and make management of course materials easier. Faculty and instructors can request access to older courses (up to 5 years) by sending an email to Blackboard Support with the name of the course and the semester it was taught.

This currently applies to academic courses in the School of Nursing and the School of Medicine and Dentistry graduate programs.

The live system will be taken offline at 6:00 AM, December 28, 2011 to start the backup processes.

7:00 AM – Backup process complete. Upgrading the application.

12:30 PM – Installing and testing customizations

3:30 PM – Upgrade complete, system back online.

The Student Portal/Blackboard Learning Management System will be upgraded from version 9.0 to version 9.1 on Wednesday December 28 between 6 AM and 4 PM.

Blackboard course functions will be unavailable during this time period, however many portal services, including email access, may be available. This is not a significant update in terms of changing the way things look in Blackboard, but there are a few things that will change for instructors. Additionally, after the upgrade, unavailable courses that are older than two years will no longer be displayed to instructors. Directory, Learn and Parking now in the UR Mobile App

There are some nifty things in the UR Mobile App that you might not know about.

UR Mobile is available for iPhone, iPod Touch, Android and Blackberry devices. Also via the web at http://m.rochester.edu.

1. Faculty/Staff directory – allows you to search and directly add someone to your contacts.

2. Blackboard Mobile Learn - you don’t need a separate App to access Blackboard Mobile Learn course information, it’s now also available from within the UR Mobile app.

3. Medical Center Parking Availability- you can see how many spaces are available in any Medical Center parking lot.
